ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
The JASS Music Scholarship is a specialised merit-based scholarship in a Bachelor's/Master's degree in Jazz Studies. It is designed to nurture talented young musicians with a passion for jazz music, promote excellence in jazz performance and composition as an art form and develop leaders in the jazz arts landscape.
JASS aims to award up to 2 scholarships in Jazz Studies (Performance or Composition/Arrangement) annually. The International Scholarship is up to S$30,000 per academic year and the Local Scholarship is up to S$10,000 per academic year.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified via email and letter by early May 2019.
Applications may be submitted via post, courier or email and must reach JASS by 2 May 2019, 11am. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
1ST ROUND:
Auditions via Dropbox link or in an unlisted YouTube video format of up to 10 minutes, to be submitted by 2 May 2019, 11am. Candidates shortlisted for the second round of assessment will be informed by early May 2020.
2ND ROUND:
(for short-listed candidates):
Skype or in-person interviews will be conducted early May 2019 and reviewed by a panel if required.
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Applications without complete supporting documents will not be considered for the JASS Music Scholarship (refer to Appendix A: Submission Checklist)

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all components of the Scholarship application are received by JASS before the application deadline.

All materials and documents submitted will not be returned. Applicants are to make a copy of their application for their retention and record.

All information provided must be complete and true at the time of submission, and all subsequent requests for additional information by JASS for the processing of the scholarship application should be promptly attended to.

Certified true copies of all transcripts and certificates submitted will be required of successful applicants.

ANNEX 1: PERSONAL STATEMENT
A personal statement needs to clearly articulate the following:

How do you see yourself contributing to Singapore’s and the international jazz scene in 10 years’ time? Please include your vision of the Singapore jazz music landscape and your personal and career goals, both short-term and long-term.

How will a degree in Jazz Studies add value to your current experience and knowledge of your artistic practice or profession as a jazz musician, and help fulfil your personal and career goals?

Besides financial support, how else can the JASS scholarship help you achieve your aspirations?

How do you intend to utilise your degree in Jazz Studies as a means for social change or to make a difference in people’s lives?

Who are your role models and why?
ANNEX 2: LETTER OF ADMISSION

A printed copy of the letter of admission to the institution where the proposed course of study is to be undertaken. If you have listed more than one option, please provide the letters of admission to all institution listed.

If you are awaiting admission, you may submit proof of application (eg a printed copy of email confirmation of your application). However, you must submit proof of admission if you are successfully selected to be awarded the JASS Music Scholarship. In the event where the institution of your choice has yet to open for applications at the time of the JASS scholarship submission, please submit documented proof (eg. email from the institution).
ANNEX 3: CONFIDENTIAL REFERENCES

Confidential references from 2 referees. Referees must be familiar with your experience and achievements in the arts, and must not be your immediate family members.

As this is a confidential reference, your referees should seal and sign on the envelope tabs before handing it to you for submission with the rest of your supporting documents. Please ensure that the envelope remains sealed and is not tampered with. Only sealed reference letters will be accepted for consideration.

Please ensure that your referee includes their contact details (email and/ or mobile number) in the event that JASS needs to contact them for further information concerning your application.
ANNEX 4: PORTFOLIO

If you are specialising in jazz music performance, please submit a compilation of your works via Dropbox link or in an unlisted YouTube video format of up to 10 minutes. The compilation must feature your best works, recent works and may include unedited “live” footage from a performance or rehearsal. You must be clearly identified in the video.

Please avoid submitting group performances where your performance is not distinct.

If you are specialising in jazz music composition, please submit a compilation of works via Dropbox link or an unlisted YouTube video link of up to 10 minutes in duration. The compilation must feature your best works and recent works of significant excerpts and styles. The footage must be accompanied by respective music scores. Please provide 2 copies of all music score sheets for submission with the rest of your supporting documents.

All videos must be supplemented by accompanying notes including:

The title of work and event, start-end timing of video in mm:ss format

Your role in the production/ project;

Names of performers involved other than yourself;

Date and venue of event;
-
Instruments used and timings of each segment of work to be reviewed by the panel.
