The Jazz Association (Singapore) presented Jazz It Up! A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024 on 18 and 19 May 2024.
The concert featured Teresa Carpio 杜麗莎, the 1970s Hong Kong Canto-English pop singer who performed her top hits including “眉头不再猛皱 (Sukiyaki)”.
The concert also featured Singaporean singer-songwriters, 黄伟深 Wysom Wong, and Serene Koong 龔芝怡.
Together with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) led by Weixiang Tan, Senior Associate Music Director, JASS, they presented specular renditions of well-loved Chinese evergreens and modern classics.
JAZZ AU JARDIN - CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2024

“Jazz Au Jardin – Celebrating International Jazz Day 2024” was presented by the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) and was held alongside vOilah! France Singapore Festival.
The concert was led by JASS Executive Director and Music Director, Jeremy Monteiro, and Associate Music Director, Chok Kerong. They were joined by guest musicians and vocalist, Sylvain Beuf, Nicolas Folmer, and Alemay Fernandez for a vibrant set that included familiar favourites and music from the legendary Michel Legrand.

The musical featured actors from ACT 3 Theatrics and original jazz compositions by Weixiang Tan, JASS Senior Associate Music Director, alongside the musicians from the Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!).
LION CITY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2024

The Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) and Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!) presented “Lion City Jazz Festival (LCJF) 2024 – Dizzying Heights"!
Throughout the week-long festival, the mentors from the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band led engaging workshops, and delivered a captivating performance on Friday, 1 March 2024, at the concert titled, “The Dizzy Gillespie Band led by John Lee.”
The festival also included the inaugural Jazz Composition Symposium, “The Consolidation, Expansion & Longevity of Jazz”. It brought together an international panel of speakers who dived into jazz composition in its traditional form and the expansion of it to include ethnic elements.

The Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) illuminated the stage with their sensational year-end performance at Jazz by the Cove on 17 December 2023!
Led by Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS)’ Executive Director and Music Director, Jeremy Monteiro, alongside JASS’ Senior Associate Music Director, Weixiang Tan, and JASS’ Associate Music Director Chok Kerong, JASSO performed a swinging repertoire that got the crowd tapping along!
The performance was made even more special by our surprise guest for the evening, American Jazz Vocalist and Grammy Nominee, Carmen Bradford. She was joined by Singaporean Jazz Vocalist, Melissa Tham. Both of them mesmerised the audience with beloved jazz favourites.
The grand finale featured an All-Stars Jam, bringing together talents like international sensations Giacomo Turra, CHiLi GiRL, Toshiki Seojima & Nahokimama, and TOKYO groove jyoshi.

The inaugural Artist-in-Residence Masterclass by the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) featured the sensational two-time Grammy Nominee, Roberta Gambarini.
Held across three days, the Artist-in-Residence came to a resounding finale on 6 September 2023, at the Red Dot Brewhouse.
Roberta Gambarini, together with JASS Associate Music Director, Chok Kerong, and a select group of Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) musicians dove deep into the heart and soul of jazz. The participants explored the rhythmic intricacies that make jazz a captivating language and the techniques to unleash their natural voices by infusing every note with emotion.
JASS BENEFIT GALA 2023 - "OVER THE RAINBOW"

The JASS Benefit Gala 2023 'Over the Rainbow' which took place on Saturday, 2 September 2023, was truly a magical evening of music, colours and rainbow magic.
The Gala featured an electrifying performance by Italian jazz singer, Roberta Gambarini, along with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), led by JASS Executive Director and Music Director Jeremy Monteiro.
The Gala would not have been possible without the steadfast and strong support received from friends and supporters of JASS.

The Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) presented "Kaleidoscope - An Asian Jazz Odyssey 2023 (The Reprise)".
It was a night to remember where Jazz meets Asian ethnic elements with the performance by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) Ethno-Jazz Ensemble and their special guest performers!
In addition to the JASSO Ethno-Jazz Ensemble, the concert featured JASS Music Director, Jeremy Monteiro and JASS Associate Music Director, Chok Kerong. The ensemble will also be joined by musicians from Drum Feng, as well as vocalists Khor Ai Ming and Rudy Djoe, and dancers from the Bhaskar’s Arts Academy.
From long-standing compositions by Jeremy Monteiro such as “Asiana” and a re-imagination of his composition “Shakti Dance” as well as Chok Kerong’s “Asian Odyssey”, the ensemble performed an exciting repertoire that showcased the uniquely Singaporean sounds.

The talk also explored the historical impact of jazz in modern Chinese culture, with a panoramic view from its heydays in the roaring 20s, to Latin-laced mambos in the 60s and 70s, and its eventual assimilation into Chinese pop culture in modern times.

Jazz Association (Singapore) celebrated UNESCO International Jazz Day 2023 with "Swing! Swing! Swing!", a fun-filled outdoor concert at the Botanic Gardens Symphony Stage, featuring the Jazz Association Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!) led by Senior Associate Music Director, Weixiang Tan.
JASSYO! performed swinging classics by the greatest big band leaders of all time, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, showcasing Norwegian clarinet virtuoso, Felix Peikli. It was an exciting evening full of swinging classic big band tunes such as Count Basie’s “The Kid from The Red Bank,” “Cute,” and other classic jazz tunes
A JAZZ MUSICAL: WILL THE EGG HATCH?

Jazz Association (Singapore), together with ACT 3 Theatrics, presents its first ever Jazzed-up Kampong Musical, titled, "Will the Egg Hatch?".
This ground-breaking musical, aimed at young kids of all ages, revolves around the struggle that ensues between the antagonistic Snake tries to prevent the Egg from hatching, and the brave Mrs Hen, who attempts to foil Snake's plan with the help of her friends in the farm. Specially composed jazz music elevates the musical drama, and will keep you at the edge of your seats!
"Will the Egg Hatch?" is narrated by Amy J Cheng of Act 3 Theatrics, and features the musical compositions of Weixiang Tan, Senior Associate Music Director of JASS, drawing inspiration from Chinese Singaporean Culture.

The JASSO Pinnacle Concert series is the apex concert series by the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS). The JASSO Pinnacle Concert series is a culmination of the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO)'s efforts and experience in pursuit of jazz excellence and showcased the finesse and sophistication achieved by the orchestra in.
This year, the JASSO Pinnacle Concert series featured Laura Fygi, Dutch jazz diva, whose illustrious career spans 33 years. She was accompanied by the JASSO, led by Jeremy Monteiro, Executive Director and Music Director of JASS. JASSO, who accompanied Laura, comprises top Singapore jazz professional musicians including JASS Associate Music Director and pianist Chok Kerong, Shawn Letts (saxophone), Julian Chan (saxophone), Leo Jeo (trombone), Tama Goh (drums), guest musicians Eddie Wen (trumpet) and guest principal trumpeter, Tom Walsh, who is amongst the best lead trumpet players in the world.
The two-hour concert featured Blue Moon, Night and Day and What a Wonderful World.
The JASSO Pinnacle Concert 2023 featuring Laura Fygi was jointly presented by IMC Live Global and the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS).

The "Common Language of Swing" is an essential topic for jazz musicians, more so - as we strive for excellence in jazz.

Join the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) musicians and youth mentees at ART:DIS (formerly known as Very Special Arts) for “What If I Is Not Me” held in conjunction with Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) as they present a interweaving of multidisciplinary art inspired by Claire Teo’s monologue and led by Weixiang Tan, Senior Associate Music Director, Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS). The jazz pieces featured during the presentation are commissioned by JASS and are compositions of JASSO musicians Joe Lee and Jeffrey Tan.
“What If I Is Not Me” is held as an ongoing collaboration between JASS and ART:DIS to provide beneficiaries and youth mentees with the opportunity to express themselves through jazz.

We experience emotions (or feelings) on a daily basis, with the habit of categorising them as positive or negative emotions, much like a colour palette. Rather than reacting to or suppressing these emotions, learning to manage them can help us achieve mental wellness for ourselves.
The Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) is organising a concert presentation, "Swinging Through Our Emotions", to take you on an experiential journey to discover and explore the five emotions - through jazz.
The concert presentation will be led by Jeremy Monteiro, Executive Director and Music Director of JASS, joined by Speakers Professor Kua Ee Heok (Keynote speaker, Consultant Psychiatrist, former Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine, National University of Singapore, and former CEO and Medical Director, Institute of Mental Health), Aarti Chidambaram (Speaker, Clinical Psychologist, The Relational Counselling Studio) and Varian Monteiro (Speaker & Facilitator, Counselling Therapist, The Relational Counselling Studio). Their presentations will be complemented by JASSO Musicians.

JASS holds its annual benefit gala to raise funds to support its mission of promoting jazz excellence, nurturing talent and building Singapore into a city of jazz.
The JASS Benefit Gala 2022 will be held on Sunday, 31 July 2022, at the Shangri-La Hotel. The gala will be the first full-fledged gala to be held in Singapore by an arts company since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in April 2022.
Themed “Swing It!”, the gala will be a triple celebration – celebrating Jeremy Monteiro’s 45th career-anniversary, the 121st birthday of jazz legend and father of modern jazz, Louis Armstrong, and JASS’s upcoming 6th anniversary celebration. The JASS “Swing It” Gala 2022 also celebrates our Singapore and Singapore-based jazz musicians who have made huge inroads internationally. As such, the Gala will feature performances by Singapore’s foremost jazz and pop stars, Nathan Hartono and Joanna Dong, alongside JASS co-founder and Singapore’s “King of Swing,” Jeremy Monteiro with the Jazz Association Singapore orchestras.

Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro with Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, French musicians, trumpeter Nicolas Folmer and saxophonist Sylvain Beuf, performed virtually with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) onstage songs such as "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Summer Knows," "You Must Believe In Spring," and "La Vie En Rose," alongside Singapore-based vocalists, Richard Jackson and Maya Raisha.
The concert also featured compositions by Folmer and Beuf in the style of Legrand and other French influences, and a joint composition by Folmer, Beuf and Monteiro.

Celebrate JASS' fifth anniversary through a special series of jam livestreams!
Titled "Jam with JASS!" this special six-night series of livestreams took place nightly at 8pm from 21 September, culminating in a finale jam session on 26 September! The series featured musicians from the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), the Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!) and other local jazz musicians coming together in a structured series of jam sessions exemplifying this traditional format of open music-making unique to jazz.
Besides commemorating JASS fifth anniversary, the sessions also help provide performance opportunities to sustain the livelihoods of our musicians, especially the freelancing Singaporean jazz musicians among them, through the Self-Employed Person (SEP) Grant, part of the National Arts Council (NAC)'s Enhanced Arts and Culture Resilience Package (ACRP) to enable continued support for Singaporean arts and culture freelancers. Following the successful inaugural concert in 2019, the Jazz Association (Singapore) and the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre are proud to present "Jazz It Up! A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2021."
Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro and Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, this year shows features a new repertoire of well-loved Chinese evergreen and modern-classic songs set to sophisticated yet toe-tapping jazz arrangements performed by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO).
This year's show was joined by multi-talented Singaporean jazz vocalist, musical theatre actress and TV host Joanna Dong (董姿彦) who was a finalist in the "Sing! China" 2017, as well as Singaporean singer-songwriter Tay Kewei (郑可为), and up-and-coming star, Singaporean singer-songwriter Marcus Lee (李俊纬) of Channel U's "Campus Superstar" fame and who was featured in the second season of "The Great Singapore Replay" in 2020.

Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro and Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, this year's Finale Concert repertoire features the music of two jazz legends of swing, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, international mentors and a few Singapore-based mentors joined virtually in a hybrid concert, together with the rest of our local mentors and youths who performed onstage at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC).

New York-based jazz trumpeter Alex Sipiagin discussed the various ways of creating a beautiful aesthetic in the improvisation of jazz music. The workshop shared inspiration from the jazz greats, from traditional to modern, as well as ideas from Alex's own methodology.

In this workshop, Scotty Barnhart gave a concise history of the big band tradition and discussed the rhythmic and harmonic elements that was cultivated and which it continues to elaborate and refine today. Special attention was paid to the most influential band leaders and their soloists, the few that really shaped the course of big band performance.

Carmen Bradford shared her experience as a vocalist singing with big bands and small ensembles for over 40 years, and the differences between both settings. There is so much more physically-involved when working with a big band, with one's vocal stamina playing a huge role when singing in front of 17 instrumentalists. The same can be said about a small group, where one might over-project after singing with a larger group for so many years.

Originally planned as a "live" event in July 2020, the Gala took place virtually for the health and safety of everyone, in view of the prevalence of COVID-19. With Laura Fygi performing remotely from Amsterdam, and Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, along with the ensemble of JASS' orchestras, based in Singapore, the show was adorned with fascinating and immersive augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) components that was memorable for guests. Featuring performances of "Let There Be Love" and other well-loved jazz tunes, the gala was a key event to inaugurate JASS 5th anniversary milestone celebrating the spirit of jazz.

A virtual musical journey exploring the evolution of jazz from the early 1900s through to the present day! Professor Jeremy Monteiro took the audience on a musical tour of the history of jazz with local jazz talents Rit Xu (flute) and Siheng Teng (bass), and demonstrating the historical and stylistic milestones of the genre's progression with delightful improvisations and performances.
The talk covered the evolution of jazz from the Blues to early jazz, New Orleans jazz (often referred to as Dixieland), the birth of modern jazz in 1927 with Louis Armstrong, Swing, Bebop, Latin jazz, all the way to fusion and contemporary jazz. Live-streamed, audience were able to enjoy the journey from the safety and comfort of their homes.

This digital concert was a swinging celebration of Singapore’s 55th birthday featuring jazzy renditions of well-loved Singapore and ASEAN songs and original local compositions, including the world premiere of “The Lion Roars Again” by JASS Associate Director Weixiang Tan!
With our Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) led by Jeremy as Music Director, Weixiang Tan as Associate Music Director and joined by many noteworthy local vocalists including Alemay Fernandez, Rudy Djoe and New York-based Melissa Tham, as well as Shabir Tabare Alam who performed with JASSO for the first time, this was a fantastic celebration of our nation’s birthday. We also had musician Mohamed Noor, who played the tabla, adding a unique local flavour to our concert. The concert will also included a special appearance by Joanna Dong.

UNESCO International Jazz Day falls on 30th April and celebrates jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people from all around the world. Since 2018, Jazz Association (Singapore) has staged free community concerts every April to celebrate this meaningful day with the community in Singapore. Due to COVID-19, JASS brought the festivities online so that everyone can continue to celebrate the joy of jazz together through JASS@HOME.
Helmed by JASS Executive Director and Music Director and Singapore's "King of Swing" Jeremy Monteiro, the online concert included a virtual jam session featuring a swinging version of well-loved folk-song "Singapura" and performances by Jeremy, JASS Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, Christy Smith, Tamagoh, Alemay Fernandez and more, as well as jazz solos by Randy Brecker, Rit Xu and other local musicians.
In addition, Chok Kerong and Aya Sekine was joined by Jeremy and Weixiang in a panel discussion where they demystified jazz composition. The show also featured interview with jazz stalwarts Aileen Tan from Blu Jaz Cafe and Peter Ng from Maduro as they shed light on the running of local jazz establishments. JASS also presented the 2020 JASS Scholarship in a virtual award ceremony to its 2020 recipient, Ernest Tan.

Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro with Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, the concert will feature top vocalist Tina May from the UK as well as well-known and established Singaporean vocalists, Louis Soliano and Alemay Fernandez. Other guest musicians from the UK include Alan Barnes, who has twice been named BBC Jazz Musician of the Year, and Trumpeter Henry Lowther, best known for his work with jazz luminaries Kenny Wheeler and the great British jazz icon Johnny Dankworth. On lead trumpet is Tom Walsh who despite having been a professional musician for only a few years, has already been featuring alongside the likes of multi-Grammy Award-winning musician, Quincy Jones.

The new Eurasian Heritage Gallery (EHG) was launched by President Halimah Yacob at the The Eurasian Association (EA).
A highlight of the launch was the debut of a song specially composed by JASS Executive Director and Music Director Jeremy Monteiro to commemorate the EA’s centennial. Entitled ‘To be Eurasian, to be Singaporean - It’s One and the Same’, Jeremy’s composition was inspired by an article written by EA Heritage Chairperson, Julia d’Silva titled, ‘I am Eurasian and Singaporean – Same, Same’. Celebrating the Eurasian community as one that is Singaporean in all its diversity in heritage and achievements. It was performed by Alemay Fernandez, accompanied by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO).

The annual Korea Festival presents a musical concert by the hottest artists of the nation in its programme of events. This year will mark the very first time a jazz concert is part of the festival's line-up and will feature two groups of esteemed performers from both countries - the Jazz Association (Singapore)'s JASS Ensemble from Singapore, led by JASS Music Director and Singapore's King of Swing, Jeremy Monteiro, and Heo So Young, an acclaimed jazz vocalist hailing from Korea, with her band.

Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, with Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, the concert features Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford and vocalist-virtuoso Kenny Washington as the featured mentor-vocalists. The repertoire for the evening will feature the well-known songs and themes of the Gershwin Musical, Porgy & Bess, like the classics “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty ‘O Nuttin.’”

The Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) organises the annual Lion City Youth Jazz Festival, its linchpin event centred around youth musicians. It comprises a series of workshops and rehearsals culminating in a finale concert, with a focus on nurturing the talent and developing the skills of youth
musicians under the tutelage of international jazz legends and prominent professional jazz musicians specially-invited to be their mentors. The signature of this festival is the week-long series of workshops under its "On-Stage Learning Programme," and immersive and practical programme for youth musicians to experience rehearsing and playing at professional levels of jazz performance.

Join JASS Executive Director & Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, Rit Xu, Tamagoh and Teng Siheng as they demonstrate the techniques of jazz improvisation and how to apply these techniques of these techniques to your interpretation of music. This is a classical workshop for classically-trained musicians who wish to learn the techniques of jazz improvisation.

The concert embodies a celebration of jazz music across history and cultures, with a repertoire comprising swinging jazz standards, original compositions by Singapore jazz composers, as well as newly commissioned jazzy arrangements of the beloved melodies of Singapore and her neighbours.
The concert will also feature special guest appearances by the "Godfather of Singapore Jazz," Louis Soliano, and versatile crooner Rudy Djoe.

This concert marks the first outreach concert of the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) in Singapore.
The repertoire consists of a selection of compositions by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, a couple of compositions by talented Singaporean composer/pianist/organist Chok Kerong, as well s a rearrangement of the Malacca-Portuguese fold song "Jingkli Nona". The music will traverse between swinging tunes, pulsating Latin/Bossa tunes and a Bluesy/Gospel treatment of the National Song, "One People, One Nation, One Singapore".
