    This digital concert was a swinging celebration of Singapore’s 55th birthday featuring jazzy renditions of well-loved Singapore and ASEAN songs and original local compositions, including the world premiere of “The Lion Roars Again” by JASS Associate Director Weixiang Tan!

    With our Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) led by Jeremy as Music Director, Weixiang Tan as Associate Music Director and joined by many noteworthy local vocalists including Alemay Fernandez, Rudy Djoe and New York-based Melissa Tham, as well as Shabir Tabare Alam who performed with JASSO for the first time, this was a fantastic celebration of our nation’s birthday. We also had musician Mohamed Noor, who played the tabla, adding a unique local flavour to our concert. The concert will also included a special appearance by Joanna Dong. 

     

    JASS@HOME: Swinging in Singapore is supported by the National Arts Council’s Digital Presentation Grant for the Arts, as part of the #SGCultureAnywhere campaign bringing together the best of Singapore’s arts and culture digital offerings, to be enjoyed and experienced, anytime and anywhere.

    UNESCO International Jazz Day falls on 30th April and celebrates jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people from all around the world. Since 2018, Jazz Association (Singapore) has staged free community concerts every April to celebrate this meaningful day with the community in Singapore. Due to COVID-19, JASS brought the festivities online so that everyone can continue to celebrate the joy of jazz together through JASS@HOME. 

    Helmed by JASS Executive Director and Music Director and Singapore's "King of Swing" Jeremy Monteiro, the online concert included a virtual jam session featuring a swinging version of well-loved folk-song "Singapura" and performances by Jeremy, JASS Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, Christy Smith, Tamagoh, Alemay Fernandez and more, as well as jazz solos by Randy Brecker, Rit Xu and other local musicians. 

    In addition, Chok Kerong and Aya Sekine was joined by Jeremy and Weixiang in a panel discussion where they demystified jazz composition. The show also featured interview with jazz stalwarts Aileen Tan from Blu Jaz Cafe and Peter Ng from Maduro as they shed light on the running of local jazz establishments. JASS also presented the 2020 JASS Scholarship in a virtual award ceremony to its 2020 recipient, Ernest Tan.

  • JAZZ ASSOCIATION SINGAPORE ORCHESTRA AT THE THAILAND INTERNATIONAL JAZZ CONFERENCE (TIJC) 2020

    Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, and Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, performed at the Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) 2020. TIJC is a jazz music event initiated in 2009 by College of Music, Mahidol University, aimed at presenting top quality jazz music to the public and also offering jazz education to the interested musicians (both students and the general public).

  • JASSO PINNACLE CONCERT 2019: A JAZZY BICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION OF SINGAPORE-UK FRIENDSHIP

    Jazz Association (Singapore) is proud to present its inaugural Pinnacle Concert by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), and would like to thank Guest-of-Honour Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information & Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations and British High Commissioner to Singapore, HE Kara Owen for attending the concert.

    Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro with Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, the concert will feature top vocalist Tina May from the UK as well as well-known and established Singaporean vocalists, Louis Soliano and Alemay Fernandez. Other guest musicians from the UK include Alan Barnes, who has twice been named BBC Jazz Musician of the Year, and Trumpeter Henry Lowther, best known for his work with jazz luminaries Kenny Wheeler and the great British jazz icon Johnny Dankworth. On lead trumpet is Tom Walsh who despite having been a professional musician for only a few years, has already been featuring alongside the likes of multi-Grammy Award-winning musician, Quincy Jones.

  • VSA OUT LOUD 2019: POETRY MEETS JAZZ

    JASS Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan and bassist Kenji Nakano performed at the Singapore Writers Festival - VSA OUT LOUD: Poetry Meets Jazz. 

    Presented by Very Special Arts (VSA) and in collaboration with the JASS and Writing Through, the youths from VSA shared their original poems to the accompaniment of live jazz.

     

    We were able to witness how the participants overcome challenges with grace, courage, bravery and most importantly, love.

    The new Eurasian Heritage Gallery (EHG) was launched by President Halimah Yacob at the The Eurasian Association (EA). 

    A highlight of the launch was the debut of a song specially composed by JASS Executive Director and Music Director Jeremy Monteiro to commemorate the EA’s centennial. Entitled ‘To be Eurasian, to be Singaporean - It’s One and the Same’, Jeremy’s composition was inspired by an article written by EA Heritage Chairperson, Julia d’Silva titled, ‘I am Eurasian and Singaporean – Same, Same’. Celebrating the Eurasian community as one that is Singaporean in all its diversity in heritage and achievements. It was performed by Alemay Fernandez, accompanied by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO). 

  • KOREA-SINGAPORE JAZZ NIGHT

    Jazz Association (Singapore) collaborated with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to present the Korea-Singapore Jazz Night, as part of the on-going initiative to promote cultural exchange between Korea and Singapore. 

     

    The annual Korea Festival presents a musical concert by the hottest artists of the nation in its programme of events. This year will mark the very first time a jazz concert is part of the festival's line-up and will feature two groups of esteemed performers from both countries - the Jazz Association (Singapore)'s JASS Ensemble from Singapore, led by JASS Music Director and Singapore's King of Swing, Jeremy Monteiro, and Heo So Young, an acclaimed jazz vocalist hailing from Korea, with her band.

    Led by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, with Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, the concert features Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford and vocalist-virtuoso Kenny Washington as the featured mentor-vocalists. The repertoire for the evening will feature the well-known songs and themes of the Gershwin Musical, Porgy & Bess, like the classics “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty ‘O Nuttin.’”

    The Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) organises the annual Lion City Youth Jazz Festival, its linchpin event centred  around youth musicians.     musicians under the tutelage of international jazz legends and prominent professional jazz musicians specially-invited to be their mentors.   • OUTREACH CONCERT: JAZZ IN JULY'S BIG BAND SUNDAY

    Join the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS), and its youth orchestra, JASSYO!, in a rousing concert at Esplanade's Jazz in July. 

    JASSYO! will be playing under the direction of JASS Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, with the support of Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan. The concert embodies a celebration of jazz music across history and cultures, with a repertoire comprising swinging jazz standards, original compositions by Singapore jazz composers, as well as newly commissioned jazzy arrangements of the beloved melodies of  Singapore and her neighbours. 

    The concert will also feature special guest appearances by the "Godfather of Singapore Jazz," Louis Soliano, and versatile crooner Rudy Djoe. 

  • CELEBRATING SINGAPORE BOTANIC GARDENS HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2018

    Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) is proud to present a concert as part of the Singapore Botanic Gardens Heritage Festival 2019, celebrating Singapore Botanic Gardens' 3-year inscription anniversary as a World UNESCO Heritage site.

  • LION CITY YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 - FINALE CONCERT

    The concert is a culmination of an annual youth-musician-focused learning and immersion programme, comprising 5 days of intensive rehearsals and workshops, under the guidance of international jazz legends and prominent professional jazz musicians. 

    Concert featured 5-time Grammy award-winning Trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker, Cultural Medallion-winner Jeremy Monteiro, Jay Anderson, Lewis Nash, Antonio Hart, Ulf Wakenius, Tom Walsh, Marques Young and Joe Darin.

    Super Jam at Relish was organised as a part of the Lion City Youth Jazz Festival 2018. After a week of intensive rehearsals, workshops and practicing, mentors and their underlings together with members of JASSYO! had an enjoyable jam session at Relish.

    The Lion City Youth Jazz Festival is an annual youth-musician-focused learning and immersion programme, comprising 6 days of intensive rehearsals, workshops and a final concert on the last day, under the guidance of international jazz legends and prominent professional jazz musicians. 

    MENTORS: 5-time Grammy award-winning Trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker, Cultural Medallion-winner Jeremy Monteiro, Jay Anderson, the most recorded drummer in jazz history Lewis Nash, Antonio Hart, Ulf Wakenius, Tom Walsh, Marques Young and Joe Darin. 

  • BORNEO JAZZ FESTIVAL

    Notable musicians in JASSO are Music Director and pianist Jeremy Monteiro, Associate Music Director and pianist Weixang Tan, top Singapore guitarist Andrew Lim who used to be based in New York, Jazz drumming stalwart Tamagoh, and established baritone saxophone player Tim Stocker, who  hails from Australia. American lead trumpeter Kyle Gregory, as well as  Malaysian trumpeter Eddie Wen, and top European saxophonist Tony Lakatos will guest with JASSO at Borneo Jazz.

    In the spirit of uniting people from all corners of the globe through the universal language of jazz, join the Jazz Association (Singapore), otherwise known as JASS, and its youth orchestra JASSYO!, in commemorating UNESCO International Jazz Day with a rousing concert the Sunday before the designated International Jazz Day. The repertoire will comprise songs from original compositions by Singaporean jazz composers as well as international jazz standards.

    SING JAZZ celebrates Singapore's very own JASSO (Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra led by the "King of Swing" Jeremy Monteiro. Founded in 2017 by the Jazz Association (Singapore), the band has had numerous opportunities to take the stage at the internationally-renonwned JZ Shanghai Festival in October 2017, where they performed on the main stage of the festival along with international stars scubas Kool & The Gang. This year, joined by local songbirds Melissa Tham and Alemay Fernandez, Monteiro has combined their superb vocal talent with the orchestra made up of 24 jazz musicians, together with the most outstanding members from  their youth orchestra.

It was a night of jazz amongst lush greenery and a delightful spread of food and drink to celebrate the progress Jazz  Association (Singapore) has made since its humble beginnings with the help of jazz supporters and friends.

    Join Professor Jeremy Monteiro as he takes you on a musical tour of the history of  Jazz with his musician friends. He will talk about the evolution of Jazz from the Blues to early Jazz, New Orleans Jazz (often referred to as Dixieland), the birth of Modern Jazz in 1927 with Louis Armstrong, Swing, Bebop, Latin Jazz into Fusion and Contemporary Jazz. 

  • NIE-NTU COMMUNITY OUTREACH CONCERT

    This concert marks the first outreach concert of the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) in Singapore. 

    The repertoire consists of a selection of compositions by Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, a couple of compositions by talented Singaporean composer/pianist/organist Chok Kerong, as well s a rearrangement of the Malacca-Portuguese fold song "Jingkli Nona". The music will traverse between swinging tunes, pulsating Latin/Bossa tunes and a Bluesy/Gospel treatment of the National Song, "One People, One Nation, One Singapore".

    JASS held its inaugural Benefit Gala in 24 November 2018, with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs, as our Guest of Honour. The theme is "Ella 100, Jazz Forever!" This will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary vocalist, Ella Fitzgerald. 

  • 13TH JZ FESTIVAL SHANGHAI

    JASSO is led by Singapore's King of Swing and one of Asia's best known Jazz musicians Jeremy Monteiro, who has performed on the main stages of the Montreal, London and Mt Fuji Jazz festivals to name a few, a 14 piece version of JASSO will travel to play at the 2017 JZ Shanghai Jazz Festival. 

    Notable musicians amongst the Singapore group coming to the festival are top Singapore musicians Jazznote Recording Artist and vocalist Melissa Tham, top SE Asian  Jazz guitarist Andrew Lim two has also lived and worked in New York, winner  of the USA Flute Association Flute Category Rit Xu and one of the most respected drummers int he region, Tamagoh.

  • LION CITY YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL C0NCERT 2017

    The Jazz Association (Singapore) organised its very first Lion City Youth Jazz Festival from 22 to 27 May. The festival aims to nurture young talent and develop the skills of aspiring musicians, with the support and mentorship of international jazz legends. 

    It featured mentors such as saxophonist and composer Benny Golson (USA), Music Director and pianist Jeremy Monteiro (Singapore), Guest Music Director Fritz K Renold (Switzerland), and members of the Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!)

    The Lion City Youth Jazz Festival will culminate in a public concert at the Victoria Theatre on Saturday 27 May 2017.
