ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

The JASS Music Scholarship is a specialised merit-based scholarship in a Bachelor's/Master's degree in Jazz Studies. It is designed to nurture talented young musicians with a passion for jazz music, promote excellence in jazz performance and composition as an art form and develop leaders in the jazz arts landscape.

 

JASS aims to award up to 2 scholarships in Jazz Studies (Performance or Composition/Arrangement) annually. Scholarship support is up to 3 years.

VALUE:

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Up to S$120,000 for 4 years

(i.e. up to S$30,000 per academic year)

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP

Up to S$30,000 for 3 years

(i.e. up to S$10,000 per academic year)

APPLICATION PERIOD:

22 FEBRUARY - 31 MARCH 2024

APPLICATIONS OPEN FROM 22 FEBRUARY 2024

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by April 2024. 

 

Applications must reach JASS by Friday, 31 March 2024, 1159pm. 

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

1ST ROUND:

Auditions via Dropbox link or in an unlisted YouTube video format of up to 10 minutes, to be submitted by Friday, 31 March 2024, 6pm. Candidates shortlisted for the second round of assessment will be informed by April 2024.

2ND ROUND:

(for short-listed candidates):

Zoom or in-person interviews will be conducted in April 2024 and reviewed by a panel if required.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Applicants must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

  • Applicants must possess GCE "A" Level, Diploma (Polytechnic or Music Diploma, Licentiate or Fellowship Diploma), International Baccalaureate or equivalent, or have gained admission/ are eligible for admission into first-year full-time undergraduate/ postgraduate studies for the AY2024/ AY2025 intake.

  • The scholarships are also open to undergraduates/ postgraduates currently enrolled in a Bachelor's/ Master's degree programme in Jazz Studies (Performance or Composition/Arrangement).

ASSESSMENT CONSIDERATIONS

  • Undergraduates or prospective undergraduates with good academic and CCA records.

  • Outstanding track record or relevant experience in music studies with participation and/ or achievements in external activities.

  • High level of maturity, exceptional personal vision, drive and leadership qualities.

  • Applicants must be proficient jazz musicians with a working knowledge of music theory, a competent ability on their chosen instrument, and a good level of jazz improvisation.

  • For male Singapore citizens or PRs, applicants must have completed National Service, unless exempted.

Scholarship Conditions

SERVICE COMMITMENT

  • Recipients of the JASS Scholarship need to fulfil up to 20 performances and conduct 2 talks over 2 years as a service commitment in the jazz music sector upon graduation. 

  • Alternatives are possible with mutual agreement between JASS and the scholarship recipients.

 

  • Recipients will need to confirm their service commitment plans with JASS 6 months before graduation. 

CONDITIONS

  • The scholarships do not cover miscellaneous fees and student insurance. 

     

  • Disbursement of scholarship funds will be divided into equal amounts for each semester and credited into the recipient’s account. The recipient is liable for any remaining fees payable. 

     

  • Scholarship funds must be used for the period for which they were awarded, and no amount of the scholarship may be carried forward. Successful applicants must pursue the course faithfully and sit for all prescribed assessments / examinations. 

     

  • The recipient must maintain a strong academic performance for each level of study in order to be considered for subsequent years of scholarship, subject to a maximum of 3 years or the minimum duration required to complete the course, whichever is shorter.

     

  • JASS reserves the right to review, withdraw, or suspend at any time any scholarship in full or partially, if any of the conditions are not met. JASS’ decision on any award and its value is final. JASS will not enter into any correspondence on the reasons for the decision.

APPLICATION PROCESS

By Online Form:

  • Applicants will need to log-in to their Gmail (i.e. Google Mail) account to use the online form. 
    - If you do not have a Gmail account yet, you can simply create one here

Useful Tips:

  • The online form application process does not support the saving of drafts. So please click here for a form preview so you can better prepare before you apply. 

  • Supporting documents will need to be submitted through the online form, so it will be best to have them ready beforehand.

  • We will send an email to acknowledge your application within 5 working days. 

  • Applications without complete supporting documents will not be considered for the JASS Music Scholarship.

  • Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all components of the Scholarship application are received by JASS before the application deadline.

  • All materials and documents submitted will not be returned.

  • All information provided must be complete and true at the time of submission, and all subsequent requests for additional information by JASS for the processing of the scholarship application should be promptly attended to.

  • Certified true copies of all transcripts and certificates submitted will be required of successful applicants.

Personal Statement  

Please submit a Word Document with your personal statement.

 

A personal statement needs to clearly articulate the following:

 

  • How do you see yourself contributing to Singapore’s and the international jazz scene in 10 years’ time? Please include your vision of the Singapore jazz music landscape and your personal and career goals, both short-term and long-term. 

  • How will a degree in Jazz Studies add value to your current experience and knowledge of your artistic practice or profession as a jazz musician, and help fulfil your personal and career goals? 

  • Besides financial support, how else can the JASS scholarship help you achieve your aspirations? 

  • How do you intend to utilise your degree in Jazz Studies as a means for social change or to make a difference in people’s lives?

  • Who are your role models and why? 

Curriculum Vitae (CV) 

Please submit a Word Document which includes a list of leadership positions, participation in the arts, and awards received, if any

Submission of Portfolio

Please submit a Word Document with the following information:

  1. A compilation of your works via Dropbox link or in a YouTube video format of up to 10 minutes

    • If you are specialising in jazz music performance, the compilation must feature your best works, recent works and may include unedited “live” footage from a performance or rehearsal. You must be clearly identified in the video.

    • Please avoid submitting group performances where your performance is not distinct.

    • If you are specialising in jazz music composition, the compilation must feature your best works and recent works of significant excerpts and styles. The footage must be accompanied by respective music scores. Please include 2 copies of all music score sheets in the same document.

  2. Title of work and event

  3. Your role in the production / project and instrument used

  4. Event Date and Venue (if any)

Letter of Admission / Proof of Application

  • A copy of the letter of admission to the institution where the proposed course of study is to be undertaken. If you have listed more than one option, please provide the letters of admission to all institution listed.

  • If you are awaiting admission, you may submit proof of application (eg a printed copy of email confirmation of your application). However, you must submit proof of admission if you are successfully selected to be awarded the JASS Music Scholarship. In the event where the institution of your choice has yet to open for applications at the time of the JASS scholarship submission, please submit documented proof (eg. email from the institution).
