AUDITIONS

Prerequisites

​1. JAZZ PROFICIENCY

  • Working knowledge of music theory 

  • Competent ability on chosen instrument 

  • A good level of jazz improvisation

​​2. AGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicant must be below the age of 35 on 26 February 2024 

  • Applicants below the age of 18 must seek parental consent

​​3. NATIONALITY & LOCAL RESIDENCY

  • Must be Singaporeans, PRs or legal residents (e.g. on student visa)

​4. COMMITMENT TO SCHEDULED DATES 

Successful candidates should commit to the rehearsals and entire duration of the Lion City Jazz Festival 2024. The schedule is as follows:

Audition Date: 

  • Wednesday, 17 January 2024

​

Pre-Festival Rehearsal Dates: ​

  • Thursdays, 8, 15, 22 February 2024 

  • 7pm to 10pm
     

Festival Rehearsal Dates: ​

  • Monday, 26 February 2024 - Friday, 1 March 2024

  • 10am to 5pm

Festival Soundcheck and Performance Date: ​

  • Saturday, 2 March 2024

  • 3pm to 6pm (Soundcheck)

  • 8pm to 10pm (Concert)

Audition Information

  1. Pre-screening Recording

    All applicants are to submit the following:

    - a recording (video preferred) of themselves improvising 2 choruses over F blues         using the following backing track:

    AND

    - a recording (video preferred) of a non-blues standard jazz tune. The performance should adhere to the following structure: melody in, 2 improvised choruses, melody out. For this component, candidates may perform with a backing track, a live rhythm section or solo / unaccompanied.

     

  2. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person audition on Wednesday, 17 January 2024.

    Live Audition Requirements for Vocalists:
    - perform one standard or bebop tune, inclusive of 2 improvised choruses
    - perform one ballad
    - improvise over a blues tune with a backing band 

    Live Audition Requirements for Instrumentalists:
    -perform either "Con Alma" or "A Night in Tunisia", including 2 improvised choruses
    -Sight-reading
    -improvise over a blues tune with a backing band ​

Please submit an online application form by Monday, 8 January 2024, 11.59pm.

Date of Audition: Wednesday, 17 January 2024
 

Auditions will be held at 150 Sims Drive, #02-00, Singapore 387381. JASS will notify applicants shortlisted for audition through email by Thursday, 11 January 2024.

 

Festival rehearsals will commence from Monday, 26 February 2024 to Friday, 1 March 2024. Attendance is compulsory.

Please read the information listed under "Prerequisites" to ensure you are eligible to apply for the audition, and to subsequently perform, should you be a successful candidate. 

Successful candidates are to ensure their availability on 8, 15 and 22 February 2024, 7-10pm for pre-Lion City Festival rehearsals.

Successful candidates will receive an allowance of up to S$2,300.
